Way of the Water – A Canoe Journey

■ Swedish Canoeing experience ■ Canoeing skills ■ Bush Craft & Traditional skills ■ Fire making ■ Crafting ■ Nature Connection and Observation ■ Personal & Group Inquiry ■ Creative activity & excercises

15 – 21 September 2024, Jämtland, Sweden

In the abundant harvest time and the transition into Swedish autumn, the canoe will carry us on a waterway journey, living outdoors whilst moving through and with nature. We will make our way using traditional/bushcraft skills to be in conversation with the natural surroundings we exist in. As we are directly dependent on the elements around us, these will determine the themes of practice in our everyday rhythm. Water, wind and weather will be our conversation partners in the way we travel – fire, wood and shelter in our time of rest – map, compass and the natural environment for navigation and time – use of tools, canoe skills as well as holistic awareness teach us how to care for the safety and wellbeing of both ourselves and the surrounding environment.

Into the holding of this rhythm we follow ‘the way of water’ as a focus of study. The experiential, exploratory nature of the journey allows us to explore our inner waters as much as the outer waters of the Earth and thus grant us the chance to find clearer insight into the true ideas, values, and choices that we wish to guide us from within. Throughout the journey we will come together in conversation, sharing, exercise and reflection in order to open up the great wisdom of the group around the roles that this theme plays in the worlds that have shaped us, in the ideas/norms/values that exist in ourselves, what is part of the old story that we wish to leave behind and what is the new story we wish to step into.

 There are several ways to get to Undersåker from Western Europe. Beneath we’ll show you the four options that we have tried ourselves and define as comfortable. If you want more information on either one of them or you want us to book/plan your journey (+ €60,-), let us know in your application.
Overall, we highly recommend to travel over land and sea for several reasons. A longer journey gives you the chance to acclimatise in both directions. Give yourself the experience of a night on a ferry or a train and give your money to the more sustainable ways of travelling if possible.

1)  Car (+bridge/ferry) = 25h (driving hours without stops, calculated from Belgium) +- €400

Biggest pro is flexibility: both routes, intensity and duration are adjustable to your own needs/wishes

2) Freight ship + car = 44h (33h on the ship, 11h driving hours without stops) +- €700

Best option if you don’t like driving in Western-Europe and want to give yourself an extra moment to relax to start and end your journey with.

Route: Ghent Harbour (Belgium) – Gothenburg Harbour (Sweden)/Brevik Harbour (Norway) – Sweden -> Undersåker

3)  Train = 34h (calculated from Belgium) +- €350

This option offers sustainability on many levels: we think it balances quite well between the money, time and energy you invest and what it asks from our planet

Route: Brussels – Cologne – Hamburg (night train) – Stockholm – Undersåker

4)  (train+) Plane + train = 5-20h (depending on connections, calculated from Belgium) +- €300-600

Always the fastest option and in that way more comfortable if you don’t have or see a possibility to spend more time travelling up here.

Route:

  • Brussels Airport Zaventem/Brussels South Charleroi Airport – Stockholm – Östersund -> Undersåker (train/bus)
  • Brussels Airport Zaventem – Oslo/Copenhagen – Trondheim -> Undersåker (train)
  • Amsterdam Schiphol Airport – Trondheim -> Undersåker (train)
